NEW BACKCOURT DUO SPELLS SUCCESS FOR ACES
Published on September 28, 2010
Players of the Week June 14-20
ALASKA’s Cyrus Baguio and LA Tenorio have been playing together for only a relatively short period of time.
Yet it seems as if they’ve been backcourt mates for so long, alternately taking the lead or, more often, seamlessly hooking up in leading the Aces closer to a cherished goal in the playoffs of the 2010 PBA Fiesta Conference.
“Kailangan kasing gumawa kami ng paraan para maabot ang pangarap namin,” said Tenorio, along with Baguio the Accel-PBA Press Corps Co-Players of the Week for June 14 to 20.
“Kung ano ang kailangan gagawin at gagawin,” said Baguio, who was acquired for Willie Miller last April 10 and, like the heady Tenorio, has consistently put up solid numbers in the week that was to carry Alaska to back-to-back wins.
“Both players are such keys to our success,” noted Aces coach Tim Cone. “They have both been very aggressive and need to continue to stay aggressive for our success in the upcoming playoffs.”
In their team’s victories over Rain or Shine and Sta. Lucia Realty, Baguio averaged 17 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals while Tenorio was equally impressive with 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals.
Those victories jacked Alaska’s win-loss record to a fourth-running 11-6 win-loss slate, putting it just half a game behind B-Meg Derby Ace and a game adrift of second-running San Miguel Beer.
Should the Aces end their eliminations assignments with another win over SMB on Saturday and the Llamados drop one of their last two games, then they tie for the lone remaining automatic semifinals berth.
Using the quotient, the Aces and Beermen play off for the slot with the Llamados relegated to fourth and an outright seat in the best-of-five quarterfinals.
Those are a lot of “ifs” and both Baguio and Tenorio prefer to look at the more concrete side of things.
“Hindi pa namin hawak ang destiny namin,” said Tenorio. “Siyempre habol pa rin sa automatic semis, pero kahit semis o quarterfinals okay lang.”
Baguio also would have it either way. “Sa tulad ko kasi, bago pa dito sa team, kailangan pa ng mas maraming laro para lalong mag-jell with my teammates at sa sistema ni coach,” he said. “Pero kahit ano’ng mangyari okay lang.”
Whatever happens and as is their wont, the two are sure to give it their all for the team anew. (NC)
