Alaska seeks breakthrough win against streaking Blackwater

IT’S not going to be an easy task as Alaska tries to finally break into the win column of the PBA Governors Cup.

Still winless in four outings – and 12th in all dating back to the mid-season Commissioner’s Cup – the Aces find themselves in a collision with rising Blackwater Elite at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

After losing their first three outings, the Elite have turned things around after bringing in veteran import Henry Walker for the injured Trevis Simpson. With Walker in tow, the team won back-to-back against Phoenix and erstwhile leader NLEX to get back on track in the race for a quarterfinals berth.

The sudden transformation of the Elite is certainly not lost on Alaska coach Alex Compton, who will be up against his former import in the 4:15 p.m. encounter.

“Henry Walker is a really talented player and coach Leo Isaac has been doing an excellent job of utilizing him while still bringing out the best in the local players,” said Compton.

“Art dela Cruz is injured, Mac Belo hasn’t been playing due to injury, but Blackwater has still started winning since Henry has come in.”

Isaac refers to Walker as ‘an inspiration’ to the team, which he hopes the former NBA player will be able to sustain as Blackwater aims to register the longest winning streak in its short franchise history.

“We will give our very best to achieve the first ever three-game win streak for our franchise,” he said.

Compton and the Aces are out to do the same, but in reverse manner as they try to end what had been one of the longest losing streaks in the history of the franchise.

“Blackwater is really on its way up and we have to be ready to play our absolute best if we are to start winning again,” he said
