Cone and his Ginebra Kings are not taking winless Alaska for granted

ALASKA may be in a punk right now and winless in the PBA Governors Cup.

For Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone though, the Aces are a very fine team than the 0-5 record it suggests.

And it’s basically the reason why he’s not about to take his former team for granted when the defending champion Kings battle the Aces in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu during the Petron Saturday Special game.

“Alaska is an incredibly scary team to play,” said Cone of the 5 p.m. match at the Hoops Dome. “They are not playing bad basketball. They’ve just been snake-bit and unusually unlucky.”

The Aces are currently in the midst of the longest losing streak in franchise history at 13 – dating back from last conference’s Commissioner’s Cup.

They haven’t won for the past four months and their woes had just been stretched last Wednesday when the Blackwater Elite edged them in a double-overtime win, 111-106.

But as Cone noted, “Of their last 13 losses, they could have or should have won at least 10 of them.”

The Kings, on the other hand, had been on a roll of late, winning their last three outings for a 3-1 record and solo third place.

The reigning champs though, hadn’t play for the last three weeks or since dealing NLEX its first loss in a 110-97 rout in Calasiao, Pangasinan last August 5.

Still Cone warns the Kings to be ready even though they are favored to prevail against the Aces.

“We respect them. We know we’ll have to prepare for an incredibly tough game out of town,” he said.

“It should be a good one for the Cebuanos to see.”

The game also serves as a homecoming for Cebu cage heroes Dondon Hontiveros and Greg Slaughter.
