Romeo back in rotation, gives GlobalPort a boost in showdown with San Miguel

TERRENCE Romeo takes his scoring act back to the PBA Governors Cup as the deadly gunner suits up for Globalport in its Friday night showdown with grand slam-seeking San Miguel Beer at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The 7 p.m. match will be the first for the Batang Pier shooting guard since his prominent display of firepower for Gilas Pilipinas during the recent FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut, Lebanon.

Romeo was the national team’s top scorer with average of 17.8 points and third best during the two-week tournament where Gilas finished at seventh place. He shot a high 43.9 percent from three-point range – fourth highest in the meet.

The Batang Pier hope there’s still a lot left in the tank for their prolific shooter in hopes of competing against the mighty Beermen and improve their even 2-2 records.

Romeo began practicing with the team since arriving with Gilas Pilipinas from the Lebanese capital last Tuesday.

Although coasting to a 102-90 victory over winless KIA Picanto the last time, Globalport needs everything it can have both from Romeo and the rest of the team as they will be up against a San Miguel side that is also expected to be back in full force with the return of big man June Mar Fajardo.

The 6-foot-11, three-time league MVP also practiced with the team Thursday and barely showing any signs of the strained right calf muscle that hounded him prior to Gilas Pilipinas’ departure for FIBA Asia Cup.

Fajardo already suited up in the national team’s last three outings in Lebanon and should be ready for the Batang Pier as the Beermen resume their bid for another championship and complete a three-conference sweep of the season.

The San Miguel big man didn’t see action in the team’s last outing, a 104-98 defeat at the hands of league-leading Star for its first loss in three games.

The Beermen had since been off to a three-week break.
