Garcia urges team to play smart as Marinerong Pilipino seeks semis sweep

MARINERONG Pilipino has the chance to sweep its way to the 2019 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Finals when it battles Technological Institute of the Philippines in Game Two of the semifinals Monday at Paco Arena in Manila.

The Skippers have already taken care of business in Game One of the best-of-three affair with a 98-80 decision last week, and they now have the opportunity to enter the title round for the first time with a win at the 1:30 p.m. bout.

Coach Yong Garcia, though, isn't looking too far ahead as he still sees things to work on for Marinerong Pilipino.

One of which is managing big leads as the Skippers nearly lost a 32-point lead and allowed the Engineers to knock within just nine in the payoff period until Mark Yee, Jhonard Clarito, and Jordan Rios came to the rescue.

"Masaya dahil nakuha namin yung Game One pero kailangan pa rin trabahuhin ang Game Two dahil 'di pa tapos ang series," said Garcia. "Kailangan pa ng corrections dahil noong third quarter, medyo nag-relax kaya nakadikit sila."

The Engineers, on the other hand, are pretty much aware that their backs are against the wall, but coach Potit De Vera vowed that his chargers will do anything to compete as they try to send the series to a do-or-die.

"We're gonna compete very hard against them. Kung hindi sweep, 2-1. Kung hindi, wala kaming magagawa. But we're here to compete," said De Vera, who will once again bank on Papa Ndiaye and twin towers Bryan Santos and Ivan Santos.
