Beermen try to regain solo lead vs skidding E-Painters

SAN Miguel Beer eyes a return to solo lead as PBA Philippine Cup action swings back to the Big Dome Wednesday.

Bouncing back big time the last time out, the Beermen try to push their drive in chase of regaining the lone spot at the helm as they take on the slumping Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the 6 p.m. mainer of the PBA return to the Smart Araneta Coliseum after 20 days of sorties elsewhere.

Beating Phoenix, 108-100, in the most recent bill at the Araneta on June 8, San Miguel targets the same result in an attempt to break free from a tie with Barangay Ginebra (4-1) at pole position.

And they set out for their match with the Elasto Painters riding the momentum of a 111-92 bounceback win over the Converge FiberXers Sunday.

They showed killer instinct versus the FiberXers in a great desire to win big and prime themselves up versus the E-Painters -- the finale in their killer stretch of three games in six nights.

"Gusto namin ng panalo na pwede namin dalhin sa susunod na game," said CJ Perez after a triple-double job leading the Beermen to their 19-point rout of Converge.

And with that, they proved they remain a lethal group even minus Vic Manuel, Chris Ross and Terrence Romeo.

Next up for the Beermen is the ROS side that's been on a skid after a mere escape act versus Converge, 79-77, in the season opener.

It's been a tough ride since then for coach Chris Gavina and his chargers, suffering four straight losses to NorthPort (94-81), Ginebra (90-85), Phoenix (106-102) and TNT Tropang Giga (89-85).

Rey Nambatac and his teammates are bent on checking their skid, hoping to get it with an upset of June Mar Fajardo and his pals.

But the Beermen are themselves intent to achieve their goal of sustaining a ride towards top seeding and a twice-to-beat position in the quarterfinals.

"We now hate catch-up play at saka yung pasang awa lang ang pasok sa playoffs," said San Miguel coach Leo Austria. (SB)
