Ginebra drubs Magnolia to get back on winning track

BARANGAY Ginebra outduelled Magnolia Chicken Timplados in the Easter Sunday edition of the Manila Clasico, 87-77, to get back on track in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Determined to "rise" from their numbing 73-91 setback to Meralco right before the league went on its All Star Weekend and Holy Week break, the Gin Kings shifted to high gear in the second half to wrest control of an initially tight contest against their rivals.

With a 19-5 salvo in an eight-minute period bridging the third and the fourth periods, Coach Tim Cone's crew roared to a 66-58 cushion that set the tone for their bounceback win and 3-1 overall.

The crowd darlings dealt the first loss of the Hotshots, who had opened their campaign with a 106-75 spanking of Converge last March 16.

"It's a huge win. I think our confidence took a little bit of a hit when we played Meralco. We need something to get us back going forward," said Cone.

"This was truly an effort game for us, it wasn't pretty, just a real good effort on defense. We hit the ball hard, we got back well, all those effort things came out tonight especially in the second half."

Japeth Aguilar led the Scottie Thomson-less Ginebra workforce in this win, which marked the franchise's 100th overall win in 35 years of Clasico rivalry.

Fresh from his co-MVP feat in last week's All Star Game in Bacolod, Aguilar dropped 16 points and nine rebounds to back up Stanley Pringle (17 spiked by three triples). Maverick Ahanmisi (16), Jamie Malonzo (11) and Christian Standhardinger (11-14-7) also produced big numbers for Cone's squad.

Ian Sangalang, with 17, showed the way for the Hotshots.
