Guiao coaching Team Pilipinas all the way to 2nd round of FIBA World Cup qualifier

THE 18th Asian Games yet over, but Yeng Guiao had his term as national coach extended by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

On Monday, the country's basketball federation announced Guiao will continue to call the shots for the Philippine men's basketball team all the way to the second round of the FIBA World Cup qualifier.

Guiao takes over the place of suspended coach Chot Reyes when the Filipinos battle in the next window of the qualifier against Iran on Sept. 13 and Qatar in a closed-door game on Sept. 17 at home.

SBP president Al Panlilio talked to Guiao on Sunday and made the offer.

Panlilio, who is also board of governor of Meralco in the PBA, later informed the PBA Board about Guiao's appointment.

"The SBP has decided to appoint coach Yeng for the next window. We advised him last night and he accepted it," said Panlilio from Jakarta, Indonesia where the Asiad is currently being held.

Just last week, the PBA Board met and nominated Guiao and Norman Black as possible replacement for Reyes when the qualifier resumes play next month.

But Guiao's splendid handling of the national team to the Asiad following its 96-59 conquest of Kazakhstan has convinced the powers within the SBP that the 59-year-old former Pampanga congressman and vice-governor is the right man for the job.

"It was a big factor in him accepting it," said Panlilio of Guiao's stint in the Asiad so far.

"He's worried about his NLEX team, but country comes first and he's ready to take it on," said Panlilio. (RG)
