High expectation from coach Tim puts pressure on Teytey Teodoro

Rookie Teytey Teodoro admitted there is pressure in being a Ginebra King, especially after its decorated coach Tim Cone spoke highly of him.

Cone compared the former JRU guard to his former ward and future Hall of Famer Johnny Abarrientos after Teodoro impressed him with his smooth playmaking in Ginebra's 90-79 win over TNT KaTropa Sunday at the opening of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.

Cone also likened Teodoro to former two-time league MVP Willie Miller in terms of skill set.

"Sobrang taas na player yun e," said Teodoro, who had four points in over seven minutes in his pro debut. "Medyo may pressure kasi nag-eexpect siya sa akin ng magandang laro."

But as pressured as he is, Teodoro is thankful that Cone trusts him.

"First game namin, 'di ko talaga in-expect na gagamitin ako early. Nagulat din ako pero ready ako kasi lagi ko sila pinapanood, kung anuman yung ginagawang plays so ayun," he said.

"Thankful ako sobra doon."

A crowd of 23,711 showed up at the opening of the league's 44th season, but the rookie didn't lose his focus.

"Isa rin ako sa fan ng Ginebra before so medyo sanay na ako na talagang maraming crowd," the 25-year-old from San Juan said. "In-expect ko na yun, na ganun ka-happy sa Ginebra."

"Nagulat ako na opening pa lang, nung tinawag nga yung pangalan ko, natutulala pa ako. Buti nakapagdeliver." (JB)
