Jamie Malonzo, man with a mission

JAMIE Malonzo has always considered Danny Seigle as one of his mentors.

It's a perfect partnership, to say the least, with the eight-time PBA champion guiding the Fil-Am forward in his path to the pro league.

"He's always in my ear telling me things like, think like a pro especially when it comes to the meals I'm eating and the stuff I put in my body, and to also study the players I will be playing against," he said.

This PBA Draft is considered by many as the deepest in years although self-proclaimed experts believe Malonzo has great thing going for him to emerge as the top pick overall after a stellar stint with La Salle.

The 6-foot-6 high-flyer made his mark in his short time with the Green Archers, averaging 15.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.2 steals to earn a spot in the Mythical Team last UAAP Season 82.

Yet, as impressive as Malonzo is though, he will find it tough to even match what Seigle has accomplished.

Seigle, who came to the league in 1999 as a direct hire for San Miguel, won two Best Player of the Conference awards, named Finals MVP four times, and was thrice named to the Mythical First Team.

But Seigle has one prestigious award that Malonzo is capable of winning -- the Rookie of the Year honors.

Malanzo knows well that winning individual awards is easier said that done. So right now, the 24-year-old just wants to prove that he can hold a candle with the best the league has to offer, regardless of what team selects him.

" I've been watching a couple of players who I'd like to team up with, but there are things out of my control. I'm just ready to play in the PBA," he said. (RL)
