Jeff Chan shows other facets of his game in his debut with Ginebra

Jeff Chan believes that playing defense will help him find his niche after making his Barangay Ginebra San Miguel debut in Wednesday's rout of the Columbian Dyip.

Chan scored just four points during Ginebra's 134-107 rout of the Dyip at the Smart Araneta Coliseum but he displayed other aspects of his game besides shooting threes.

Many sees Chan as another offensive source for Ginebra's that should complement the frontline tandem of Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar. However, Chan hopes to also live up to the team's defensive mindset.

"Yung iba iniisip na pag pasok ko 'ay shooter, scorer' pero hindi," Chan said. "Matagal nang binibuild-up ni coach yung defense kaya mas nag-focus ako dun and I think nagawa ko naman yung part ko."

Ginebra improved to 4-5 to tie Magnolia and GlobalPort at sixth spot and increased its chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.

Apart from defense, Chan was also praised by coach TIm Cone for the other intangibles he brought against the Dyip.

"I thought he made a big impact early," said Cone. "It kinda settle us down and got us back into the game not by his three-point shooting which everyone talks about but being a smart veteran, making smart passes and playing under control."

Chan, however, insisted that there's still more work to be done before he get used to his new environment.

"I think kailangan ko pang matutunan and mapag-aralan yung system ni coach kasi one day palang ako nakapagpractice so nangangapa pa ako doon," he said. (JT)
