Katropa brace for tough battles ahead

TNT KaTropa starts a tough stretch in the PBA Governors Cup eliminations when it takes on Meralco in a Petron Blaze Saturday Special at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Unbeaten in their first five games, the KaTropa still ache to get going as they brace for fierce battles in the last half of the elims where they face powerhouses Barangay Ginebra, Magnolia Pambansang Manok and San Miguel Beer.

The Bolts themselves could pose a tough challenge against the KaTropa with their top form built around two-time Best Import awardee Allen Durham.

Going to the 6:45 setto, coach Norman Black and his troops tote a 3-1 win-loss record.

But a win by the KaTropa could well hand them an automatic spot in the quarterfinals. A victory by Bolts, meanwhile, will muddle up the race to the top.

The KaTropa firmed up their hold of solo lead Wednesday as they survived the NorthPort Batang Pier, 103-100, on clutch hits by Troy Rosario.

Also noticeable was TNT's improvement on defense.

"There was a little improvement from our defense compared to last time, especially in the latter part of the game. We still have to continue working hard on defense," said TNT coach Bong Ravena after their escape act Wednesday.

Prior to that game, the KaTropa prevailed mostly in outscoring rivals in high-scoring duels.

Meralco has been pretty solid except in its 99-105 loss to NLEX on Sept. 27.

The Bolts, however, have atoned themselves for that loss in a 101-75 demolition of the Alaska Milk Aces the last time out. (SB)
