Matthew Wright shows way for Phoenix in 108-90 win over SMB

PHOENIX Pulse caught fire in the second half to rout San Miguel, 108-90, Wednesday in the Phoenix Super Basketball Tournament at Upper Deck Gym in Pasig.

Matthew Wright spearheaded the mugging as he uncorked 19 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals to lead the Fuel Masters to the victory.

Jason Perkins also went flawless from deep, burying all of his three triples for 17 points. He also had four boards, and two assists, and his trey at the 5:06 mark of the fourth period gave Phoenix its biggest lead at 25, 102-77.

Justin Chua got his way down low with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds that went with his four blocks for the Fuel Masters, who bounced back from a 98-87 defeat to Alaska last Monday.

Superb was Phoenix's play after the break, pouring 34 points in the third quarter to extend a 41-39 halftime lead to a 75-62 advantage heading to the payoff period.

That run continued in the final canto as the Fuel Masters scored 33 in that frame to finish with a mercurial 51-percent shooting from the field in this tune-up game against the defending Philippine Cup champion.

"Malaking bagay na maganda yung naging shooting namin after ng halftime," said coach Louie Alas.

"But again, it's only the preseason and we know na malakas pa rin naman ang San Miguel. Positive pa rin sa amin ito."

Arwind Santos came off the bench and powered the Beermen with 17 points and three rebounds.

Chris Ross added 14 points, six boards, five assists, and two steals while Paul Zamar had 10 points and three dimes in the San Miguel loss. (RL)
