SMB, TNT, Blackwater fly to Macau to compete in 'Terrific 12' league

SAN Miguel Beer sets its grand slam bid rolling when it sees action along with two other PBA ballclubs in the East Asia League Terrific 12 tournament in Macau starting Tuesday at the Tap Seac Multisports Pavilion.

With regular import Dez Wells and partner Lester Prosper in tow, the Beermen will be using the Sept. 17 to 22 meet as part of their preparation for the season-ending Governors Cup, which also serves as the final piece in their dream to complete a sweep of all three conferences this year.

Joining the Beermen in the Macau meet are TnT Katropa and Blackwater. All three teams will depart on Monday.

Fresh from a runner-up stint behind the Beermen in the Commissioner's Cup, the Katropa parade former NBA player KJ McDaniels along with McKenzie Moore, while the Elite will be reinforced by Alex Stepheson and Marqus Blakely.

It would be the first time San Miguel and TnT Katropa are competing in the annual meet featuring the top ballclubs from the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), Korean Basketball League (KBL), and the J League of Japan.

Blackwater saw action in the Asia League last year along with NLEX but failed to make the semifinals.

The Elite is bracketed in Group A along with the Chiba Jets and Seoul SK Knights, while the Beermen are in Group B together with Shenzhen Aviators and defending champion Ryukyu Golden Kings.

The Katropa along with the Liaoning Flying Leopards and Niigata Albirex Basketball are bunched together in Group D.

The 12 teams are bracketed in four groups, with the top ballclub in each bracket after the group stage advancing to the semis.

The two surviving teams after the Final Four will clash for the championship and the $150,000 prize money that goes with it. (RG)
