Vargas calls online gab; board discusses key measures

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial isn't seeing PBA play resuming soon and, with that, hints at the cancellation of some events like the D-League Aspirants' Cup.

Another possibility is the current season, which started March 8, being reduced to a two-conference campaign.

The league commissioner and the PBA board of Governors tackle measures in consonant with the country's current situation in an online meeting either Monday or Tuesday.

"Ang nakikita kong pinaka-maagang balik ng PBA ay June. Kasi even if the country is able to flatten the COVID-19 curve in April or May, I have to give our teams a month of practices before we resume play," said Marcial.

"Chairman Ricky Vargas has called a video conference. The board will assess the situation and will make a thorough study kung ano ang magandang gawin," Marcial added.

The PBA ordered play stoppage even before President Rodrigo Duterte declared the Community Quarantine in Metro Manila then the Enhanced Community Quarantine in the whole Luzon in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

"Hindi natin alam kung gaano katagal tatagal ito. Sana matapos na, at mawala na ang health threat. Pero hindi pa rin tayo makakabalik agad-agad," Marcial said.

Doubtful is the resumption of the D-League Aspirants Cup with most of the participants being school-based teams with their commitment to their respective collegiate leagues.

Varsity teams in the fold are La Salle, UST, CEU, FEU, Diliman College, SSC-R, TIP, AMA Online Education, Mapua, Letran and Enderun College. But if the D-League is scrapped, the next question is the next PBA Rookie Draft since a D-League stint is requirement to be eligible for the draft exercise. (SB)
