Victolero a special challenge, too for Reyes

CHOT Reyes tangles with Chito Victolero for the first time in a PBA title series.

Yet he already has nothing but great respect for his Magnolia Hotshots counterpart.

Reyes said he was impressed watching Victolero do his thing at the sidelines during the time he was out of coaching, and referred to the former Mapua point guard as a credit to the (coaching) profession.

"He has a very different way of doing things, but very effective," said the veteran mentor of Victolero.

"I think we need more young coaches like him to come in and breathed life to the local coaching profession."

Reyes and Victolero will face each other in the finals of the Philippine Cup that starts Wednesday at the Don Honorio Ventura State University gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.

To reach his first finals stint since the 2012 Commissioner's Cup, Reyes had to go through what he described as a 'special challenge,' needing to beat Tim Cone and Barangay Ginebra in the quarterfinals, and Leo Austria and the San Miguel Beermen in a semifinals series that went the full route.

"And now it's going to be coach Chito Victolero," he added.

But while the title series may focus on some individual matchups, in the end, Reyes said it's going to be a collective effort for one to win a championship.

"It's a team game. It's never about me and them. It's always going to be a team game," said the TnT mentor. (RG)
