Meralco eyes share of lead but long break worries coach Norman Black

A DOUBLE goal is on the mind of Meralco, but a tall hurdle in TNT, which has its own target, is standing in its way.

Which between the Bolts and KaTropa can realize their objectives would be known Wednesday when they collide in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Meralco is aiming to catch idle Barangay Ginebra for the lead and, at the same time, move closer to nailing a top four slot, which carries with it a twice-to-beat reward in the quarterfinals.

But TNT is hell-bent on getting back on track following a shock loss.

For KaTropa coach Nash Racela, it would mainly be about containing Bolts import Allen Durham, who has been playing like the reigning Best Import that he is with averages of 25.8 points, 18.2 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game.

"Our success will depend on how well we defend Durham," said Racela. "We just have to try and make him uncomfortable."

Meralco coach Norman Black is more concerned with how his team would come out following a 17-day respite following a 107-104 win over Phoenix last Aug. 18 and against a team coming off a 112-119 loss to GlobalPort last Friday.

"We are coming off a long break so it will be interesting to see how we respond," noted Black.

"The KaTropa are also coming off a loss so they will be raring to bounce back. We will just focus on our defense and try to slow down the high-scoring TNT team."

Glen Rice Jr., who has been averaging 31.75 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists in the four games he has played since replacing Michael Craig, is expected to lead the KaTropa's charge along with Jayson Castro, Roger Pogoy, Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo.

Aside from Durham, Black is also expected to lean heavily on Chris Newsome, Baser Amer, Jared Dillinger, Garvo Lanete and Cliff Hodge, who sat out the Phoenix game due to a sprain.
