All-Star Bacolod return bringing back to mind thrill, joy of 2008

BACOLOD -- The city chief executive's call is for the PBA stars to inspire the Bacolod youth as much as entertain all of Bacolodnons with the kind of show the PBA is known for.

The PBA players, with the encouragement of coaches Tim Cone and Jorge Gallent, are only too willing to do that, each one bracing for a competitive All-Star Game in a departure from what was more of an easy-going, free-wheeling Showtimes in the past.

Bacolod Mayor Albee Benitez is looking forward to a battle, and team skippers Japeth Aguilar and Mark Barroca have hinted at dishing it out during the main highlight of the 2024 PBA All-Star festivities presented by Arena Plus Sunday at the University of St. La Salle Gym.

"Sabi ni coach Jorge Gallent laro na parang regular PBA game, yan ang i-showcase natin para sa mga tao rito. At sabi nga ni Mayor para maka-inspire ng mga bata," said Barroca.

And this brings back to mind the previous PBA All-Star Game in the City of Smiles back in 2008 -- a spirited battle that needed extra time for the outcome to be settled.

Before a packed crowd over at the West Negros University Gym then, the South All Stars topped their North counterparts, 163-158, in overtime, with Peter June Simon emerging as the brightest star with a 29-point sizzler and going on to bring home the MVP trophy.
Regulation play ended at 149-149.

Being more of an exhibition game and not a regular match, it should have ended as a draw.

But the fans wouldn't take it.

Chants of "o-ver-time, o-ver-time, o-ver-time!" rocked the venue, and soon the players joined the loud, energetic chorus, prompting then commissioner Noli Eala to give in. And the decision drew thunderous cheers from everyone.

James Yap fired away 25, Reynel Hugnatan rifled in 23 and Jimmy Alapag bombed away 22 for the winning team ranged against the North team paced by Mark Caguioa with 24, Lordy Tugade with 22 and Mark Cardona and Jayjay Helterbrand with 19 apiece.

It was easily one of the epic All-Star editions ever.

No one is discounting the possibility of a repeat in the return of the PBA midseason spectacle in this vibrant Negros city. (SB)
