Fajardo on track for keenly awaited comeback

SAN Miguel Beer ace behemoth June Mar Fajardo is on track for a comeback in PBA Season 46.

The six-time MVP winner was among the warm bodies as coach Leo Austria and his San Miguel Beermen started training at the Batangas City Coliseum - the very first step in a bid to reclaim the Philippine Cup crown taken by Barangay Ginebra in the Clark bubble last year.

Fajardo was eager and excited to return to work after a long layoff from February last year, causing him to miss their foiled all-Filipino six-peat attempt.

But San Miguel isn't rushing things, regarding Fajardo's return path.

"June Mar is getting better and stronger by the day. Yet we are still taking it one day at a time. He is still closely monitored by our PT but he looks fine," San Miguel team manager Gee Abanilla.

Fajardo has actually been back to work from the time the Beermen began online workouts early in the month.

He has recovered from a fractured tibia that actually forced him out from the third conference of Season 45. His absence in the season-ending Governors Cup weighed heavily on their botched grand slam aspiration but the Cebuano gentle giant won't be denied of stretching his reign as league MVP.

Fajardo is back but San Miguel is still missing key pieces in training with trade acquisition CJ Perez and Moala Tautuaa hooked up with the Gilas 3x3 team that will vie in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Graz, Austria starting Wednesday.

"Pagbalik nila from Austria, hindi pa rin sila makakapag-train agad with us as they will observe the government's quarantine procedure for those coming from abroad," said Austria.

But they're nonetheless upbeat for the coming tourney where they set out as among the favorites - thanks for a big part on Fajardo's much-awaited return. (SB)
