Guiao sees a lot of promise in Clarito

YENG Guiao is the least surprised with the way sophomore Jonard Clarito has been performing for Rain or Shine in the PBA On Tour.

So far Clarito is among the reliable contributors for the Elasto Painters' unbeaten run in the pre-season, capped by a significant showing in a 100-98 thriller over the San Miguel Beermen Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Clarito top scored for the team with 17 points as he presided over a sizzling first half by Rain or Shine (3-0), which it used as a major shield in overcoming a spirited endgame comeback by the Beermen.

The team's second round pick (no. 17) in last year's draft shot 8-of-11 from the field, had three assists and two steals in a performance that hardly shocked Guiao.

"I'm not surprised. Meron talagang potential yung bata," said the Rain or Shine mentor of the 6-foot-2 former De Ocampo College product.

"He's been doing well in practice. All he needed was a break and be able to play long minutes, at least substantial minutes."

Clarito played his most minutes against the Beermen (25 minutes) as he was inserted in the starting unit for the second straight game.

The former San Juan Knights stalwart did deliver, scoring 12 points in the first half which saw the Elasto Painters led by as much as 24 points.

Guaio said Clarito was able to prove his worth during the game, rising above the challenge of trading baskets against the deadly San Miguel duo of Terrence Romeo and Allyn Bulanadi, who combined for 56 points.

"He's able to carry himself under pressure and two-way player siya," added Guiao. "He works hard on defense and he can give you a bunch of points on offense."
