Pay cut: Sacrifice in difficult time

The PBA family is joining hands to help keep the league voyage steady in this difficult time.

PBA players, coaches, team managers, team personnel and league staff members are contributing, for one, by way of a salary cut until the league resumes activities.

"Everyone understands the situation, and this is a temporary measure," said PBA commissioner Willie Marcial on the 20-percent pay slash he recommended and agreed upon by all involved.

Marcial initially brought up the idea during the PBA board meeting Monday before making it known to everybody in separate talks with the league personnel and with the players and coaches.

"The team owners have taken care of all of us all these months. Sixteen months na tayong inaalagaan sa gitna ng pandemya. It's about time tayo naman ang mag-contribute sa kanila," said the league commissioner.

The PBA board appreciated this move.

"The salary cut was just one of the measures presented by the commissioner. The board was in unison in appreciating this sacrifice. I think the commissioner exercised prudence because of the uncertainty of when we can open the season," said PBA vice chairman Bobby Rosales.

Regular pay will be back as soon as scrimmages are allowed by the government. (SB)
